What is Rico – A Tale Of Two Brothers?
Rico – A Tale Of Two Brothers is a retro-inspired platformer for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux that mixes elements from many great classics like Super Mario, Castlevania or Metroid with my own humble ideas.
Bottom line: I wanted to create a game I would have loved to play as a child and still love to play now!
Rico features 32 levels spread over 4 worlds of retro awesomeness! :)

What do the players say?
“Just what the 8-bit Dr. ordered!!! Awesome music, graphics, good controls and gameplay! Best dollar spent on the android market yet!!!”
“Great game. Probably the best platformer style game for Android yet.”
“Awesome platformer! This is a perfect platformer game! Fun levels, varied environments, classis feel. If you have ever liked any platform game, you will feel right at home with Rico!”
Hey, I was looking around for your page on steam greenlight (well if it even exists) Can you kindly point me in the right direction? :)
If you are not up on greenlight, I would strongly suggest it! I believe that Rico – A Tale of Two Brothers would easily get greenlit by the steam community and your fans. Good luck, I love this game!
Thanks Justin! :)
It’s not on Greenlight… and I don’t think I will put it there. The reason is there are so many games on Greenlight already, many with a huge marketing budget. I simply cannot compete with such games and companies as they can drive much more users towards their greenlight page to generate clicks. :(
It’s been a while, but I still think you should. There are other indie games that make it into greenlight, like Eldrich.
Are there cost to enter the game there?
Yes, 100 dollars entry fee. Plus Valve is thinking about ditching greenlight anyway, so I don’t think it’s worth it.
You should put your game up at itch.io, if you haven’t already. It’s free to use and you can set the price to whatever you want and you decide how much of that is paid out to it itch with no minimum or maximum.
Nice game, but it could be better with more alive enemy like demons, creatures, etc. imho.
Hi I have completed the bundle edition and I am looking into buying the full version, but I would like to know I can somehow transfer my save from the bundle edition to the full version.
Hi! The savegame is automatically shared between the two, so no need to transfer anything. :)
Hello there will be an iphone 5 port? sorry for my bad english.
Yes, an IPhone port is in the works! :)
Rico is now available for the iPhone! :)
Hey! Just dropping by to say this game is really good, I finished it today (although I still miss a few coins in the last world) and I loved it.
I bought it on IndieGameStand and so far it’s the best one I got there. Time to tackle those bonus levels now!
Thank you very much! :)
Where can I purchase this DRM free for Windows and Linux?
it’s only available on Desura, I’m afraid. :(
That is sad… I would purchase it if it were DRM Free.
where can i find that soundtrack?:D
Did that bug with the controller mapping get sorted in the end? If yes, would I simply have to re-download it from indiegamestand?
By the way, I’m monkeytommo from that reddit thread you had going! :)
Not yet, unfortunately. I’m still waiting on the developers of the libary I’m using to fix a nasty bug that makes using controllers behave weirdly on Mac (see http://www.badlogicgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7200). If you’re not on Mac, but Windows or Linux, I can send you a preliminary copy of the game where controllers should work. How about that? :)
Sounds good, thank you very much (windows by the way).
Sorry it took so long, but I just uploaded an updated version to both Desura and IGS, where the gamepad should work. *fingers crossed* :)
Thanks, I’m going to check it out now.
Works like a dream! By the way, I love the jet-pack :D
Hi, I have the iOS version and the game crashes at the start of world 3, stage 2. My specs are iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.2, no jailbreak. Thanks for any related info.
I will look into the issue today and get back to you as soon as I have news. Sorry for the inconvenience!
I have the exact same issue. On iPhone 4S, 6.1.2
First of all, I want to thank you for this lovely game ;-)
Same problem here. The “loading”-Screen between world 3 stage 1 and stage 2 appears for a few seconds. And then the game crashes.
iPhone 4S, 6.1.2
Hey. Love the game. Only issue is on my android, the jump button either gets stuck or won’t work at all. If I’m in the wateor, I can’t jump out and I die. Happens quite a bit. Any chance it’s a bug issue?:-)
Hey! That sounds like a bug… which device do you have? Is it by chance a HTC?
My game crashes on the loading screen of world 3 level 2 as well.
I have an IPhone 4S iOS 5.1.1
I was really enjoying the game too :(
Did you get the newest update? It should be fixed with version 1.1!
Updating the app solved the problem. Thanks alot :)
Hey! Been a big fan of the game since I played the demo a few months ago, and was waiting for an opportunity to buy the full version, which I tried to do last night. Alas, every time I click ‘purchase’ on the Google Play (Sprint Galaxy Note 2) store link, it says ‘an error occured, your transaction was not completed’. I immediately tried purchasing another app and it went through fine, so not sure what the issue is. Perhaps you have an idea? Anyway, thanks for your time, and for creating such an instant classic. As soon as it will let me…my money is yours! ;-)
There’s an issue with the Google checkout account right now, that’s why it’s not working currently. It should work again in about a week, then you can order. :)
Thanks for your kind words!
Understood. And no problem. Well deserved, and it seems I am not alone, judging by all the glowing reviews on the Play Store. :-) Thanks for the reply! Sucks that there is an issue, cuz I am fiending to dig into the full game, but I am willing to wait and will try again in a few days. ;-)
Just wanted to say I bought the game on android. Its great. Best touch screen controls on a platformer ive ever encountered. Will you be making games for Xbox live arcade/Indies or Wii u eshop?
Thanks! :) I don’t think I will make a move to these platforms anytime soon. I’ve got enough to do with releasing for 5 platforms as it is… I would really like to, but I only have two hands! ;)
Awesome game! You should totally port this to the OUYA console. The game itself works flawlessly already ( I side loaded the Google play version to test it), only the menus need some controller loving :D. I would totally buy it again if you ever officially release it on the OUYA :D.
Hey, thanks for the feedback! I’m glad you like it! :)
I do (or did) have plans to port the game to the OUYA. And I’ve already managed to get it to run as a “proper” OUYA app. But, to be frank, the sale reports for OUYA games reported by other developers seem to be abysmal so far. And, as you said, I would need to rework the menus. I don’t want to ditch my plans for the OUYA yet, but right now I have a lot of other things to do that I think are more pressing. Such as a NEW GAME which will also be a 2D platformer! :)
BTW, I’m completely fine when people side-load the Android APK to the Ouya, as long as they have paid for it once. So happy playing! :)
Fair enough :-D It plays great at the moment anyway, the menu’s are easily handled with the touch pad on the ouya controller ^^.
Btw do you post your game dev progress on any social media? I believe I found your twitter account, but the last tweet on it dates back to somewhere in 2011. I would love to stay up to date about your new game :D
Do consider the port after the release of your new game though. I believe Rico would do well on the OUYA store. It’s a quality game and I think that it fits the OUYA niche market just fine (The quality games don’t seem to be doing THAT bad, considering the OUYA is only a month in the open?). And it’s just meant to be played with a controller! :P
Keep up the good work, I can’t wait to get my hands on your new game! :-D
Thanks for the encouragement, I sincerely appreciate it! :)
Hmm… actually, you’ve motivated me quite a bit to get it out for Ouya. I might actually do it! Even if it’s just for the kicks… :)
Another thing that would have to be changed for Rico is the payment method. As OUYA requires a free-to-play model, I would need to implement in-app purchases.
I’m not keeping any social media accounts for updates, but I regularly post on a game development forum: http://gamedevelopersrefuge.org/viewtopic.php?t=1315
first, yes my name is really hunter wilde, and second, THIS GAME IS AWESOME! I only have the demo but i’m going to get the full version.
Thanks a lot! :)
in mi cell the game don’t have all maps how i can get this? i buy the game and play word 3 level 7
What happens when you complete world 3 level 7? Does it crash?
i got the demo, and i got the high jump, but after starting the following level, the high jump no longer worked and i was stuck. Not being able to jump high enough to progress
Seems like the game can not create a savegame file. Do you have problems with other games as well?
Loved nubs. Now put Rico on iPad Air 2 on ios9 and just crashes at startup. Tried restarts etc. What’s the issue? Please fix Tim
Hi! Sorry, Rico has problems on newer iOS devices… nothing I can do about that :(
I want to buy your game on windows but the website doesn’t let me pay for it.
Desura. We were unable to initialize your Paypal payment, please try again.
Yeah, Desura’s bankrupt, so there’s no way to get the game anymore, sorry :(
No way at all? I’d be happy to throw you a few bucks through paypal for a copy.
Sorry, the game’s unavailable on PC :(
Please fix Rico on iOS !!!
Can you make this available on iPhone again? I miss playing it.
Hi, Rico has is disappeared from the Google Play shop? Today I wanted to install and play this great game again, but it seems to be missing from my library and Google Play :-(
